Galleywood U13's vs Broomfield - 8th June Match Report

9 Jun 2021
First U13s league match of the season last night and a very interesting, frantic game with Broomfield ended up as a tie. Report by Ian Brace

Broomfield won the toss and elected to bat on a hot evening at Slades Lane. We could not have asked for a better start, with Alec and Ben both cleaning bowling the opening 4 batsmen inside the first two overs and what with a direct hit run out, Broomfield were in a very precarious position of being 3-5. Their two middle order batsmen set about rectifying our blistering start but were kept in check by some tight bowling from Zach and Fred but as their confidence grew they played some nice shots to put on 49 runs before Fred picked up the next wicket. Alexander, Rohan and William also had good two over spells with Lucas fielding well with a couple of good stops. Ben came back to claim a third wicket but some good hitting from their number 8 who finished on 32 left us a victory target of 106.
Wicket takers were Ben (3-6), Alec (2-15) and Fred (1-9)

Jack and Ashton set about the chase in a controlled manner steadily accumulating runs with Ashton hitting a couple of excellent leg side boundaries before being bowled and we were 32-1. Alexander joined Jack and they both played well, scoring runs mainly on the offside, before Jack departed with the score at 70. Matthew came in and soon found his range with one exquisite cover drive for four, followed by consecutive lofted drives going one bounce for 4 and with Alexander continuing to score freely we were in a great position at 92-2 with 5 overs remaining. But Matthew was out caught not connecting with a leg side shot and the dangerous opening bowler cleaned up Alexander and we were now 11 runs short. Ben edged us towards the total before being bowled with 2 runs needed and 6 balls left. A wicket off the first ball of the 20th over followed by a scrambled single brought the scores level. Zach played what we all thought was the winning shot only for a boy to stick out a hand at short backward square leg to pluck the ball out of the air. A frantic run out followed as the illusive winning run would not come and on the final ball with the fielders crowding round a straight ball took out the stumps to give Broomfield the tie.
Run scorers were Alexander (22), Jack (18), Ashton (18), Matthew (15) and Ben 8

So a great game for the neutral but definitely one that we let get away, but all good experience for the boys particularly on not getting over confident too early as we all know cricket is a strange game and a cruel beast.
Onwards to Springfield away next Friday (18th)
