Rayne 2nd XI vs Galleywood 3rd XI - 1st May Division 9 Match Report

4 May 2021

Galleywood won the toss and elected to field on a bright, breezy and at times, distinctly chilly day at Rayne’s ground with its marvellous old oak tree on the outfield having a local law that yields 4 runs if the ball hits the tree either off the bat or from a fielder’s arm.

A solid opening spell from Steve Dickson and Harry Jacobs was seen off by the openers without loss although both bowlers came close to breaking through especially when President Mawby got his hands to a difficult over the shoulder chance.

George Thurnell and Tom Cerson made the breakthroughs in quick succession courtesy of a diving catch from the President and an outstanding catch on the boundary by Dickson with the ball really travelling.
Despite some near misses, Brazier and Mehboob put on a significant partnership which took Rayne to a challenging total, before confusion in the middle allowed a calm Boxer to run out Brazier. Nick Jacobs helped steady the last 10 overs picking up two wickets.

Rayne scored 196-5 off their 40 overs with notable contributions from their Captain Fielding (is there a better name for a cricketer) 40 and 84 no from Mehboob. Nick Jacobs 2-18, Thurnell 1-43 and Cerson 1-54 were the wicket takers.
In response Galleywood experienced an early season collapse to 30-5. Openers Adams and Gray nicked off, Boxer got one that kept low and Harry Jacobs was welcomed to the crease with one that went passed his nose off a length. Harry showed great maturity and good technique to rebuild the innings with the returning Quartermaine after Mawby inexplicably smashed a full toss straight to square leg.

The tail then helped the 3s recover with scores of 23 from Gary Williams, 26 from Steve Dickson and 10 from young George Thurnell before he became the last one out in the 40th over for 148 with Quartermaine top scoring with 35. Fielding 4-12 and Spurling 3/36 were the leading wicket takers.

Rayne won by 48 runs. Plenty to work on especially for the top 6 next week before Billericay St John visit the MCG on VE Day.
